I *Costume* I do not cosplay. I am a costumer, not a cosplayer.

inPeople rarely think about the engineering of gala gowns, or of fashion at all. This is part of a larger problem of treating traditionally feminine interests as non-science-related. Baking is practical chemistry, knitting is manual programming, makeup is about crafting optical illusions, and adjusting pattern sizes relies on algebra.
But gala gowns never appear alongside the ubiquitous thrown baseball in physics books, or pop up as exam questions. As copyright library Nancy Sims pointed out to me on Twitter, while plenty of spacial reasoning tests ask which pieces fold into a cube, none ask which set of pattern pieces would fit together into a pair of pants.

This never would have occurred to me if I hadn’t seen it pointed out.

“As an Asian Pacific Islander, representation matters. Seeing a character that resembles me in appearance and culture inspired me to pursue portraying Maui. When I first saw the marketing for Moana, I instantly felt a connection to Maui, and I just knew that with my craftsmanship skills and performance abilities, I’d be able to breathe life into this character.
I spent months searching for stretch fabric that matches my skin tone as close as possible, with respect to adapting Maui to me, rather than putting on a cultural costume. I spent over 50 hours meticulously hand-inking all of the tattoos based on the designs in the book The Art of Moana, using fabric inks. I sewed two wigs together to create Maui’s voluminous hair, and used natural clay and twine to replicate his bone necklace. His magic fish hook took over 30 hours of work, from foam fabrication, carving and painting. To create that Disney magic, I learned to program and wire around 1,000 lights through Arduino to give Maui’s hook that powerful glow. I source and painted the leaves and sewed them with my Singer Heavy Duty sewing machine.
The response from Disney fans of all ages has been incredible, with parents Skyping their children and having me sing “You’re Welcome” to them. To be able to take folks out of the ordinary and have them experience the extraordinary is very fun. To compete in the Crown Championships of Cosplay, and be recognized with a 2nd Place win by a panel of special effects artists and industry figures simply topped off the experience.
Cosplay is a blend of science and art, and being able to develop my craftsmanship skills and partner them with my performance abilities creates a magical experience. I thrive in these little pockets of shared sunshine where we can step outside of our ordinary lives and create the world we’ve imagined. In addition, being a plus-size cosplayer has encouraged many to be more body-positive and accepting of themselves and others.“

#wHAT IS THIS#he’s like halfway between gq motherfucker and giant nerdlord#i’m so uncomfortable #director krennic (via @kylostahp)
I’m just gonna say, I was kind of baffled and delighted by the costuming here. Because the trailers, with the white cape, and everyone flipping their shit about him dramatically walking through some water etcetera– I was like, aw fuck, there’s gonna be another Aesthetic Cool villain, I don’t need this in my life
and then on the giant screen there he was with his weird white outfit that clearly nobody had ever ironed and like what is that, waterproof canvas or fucking, like, ripstop fucking nylon, what the fuck
I couldn’t stop staring at the tailoring of the shoulder things, like– that’s definitely like a nylon blend, what the hell, is it quick-drying or what, no it looks terrible. And it clearly can’t be pressed; it’s not that someone neglected to press it, it’s that on its best day that’s as good as it’s capable of looking. It can’t take a crease and is just going to sit there being sort of cold and plastic and rumpled, and it drapes like a fucking tent. Here I come, I’m so dramatic, I’m wearing a fucking EZ-Up.
Sure, it’s probably stainproof, like a goddamn raincoat, but that doesn’t mean it won’t get slowly and inexorably just– grubby. And you can throw it in the washer and hang it to dry and it’ll dry in no time but it won’t really be clean. And you can’t iron it. That’s just the best it can do.
It’s the only way to have a white cape, but it’s pretty clearly not really worth doing.
(Look at his sleeves. The cape is bluish. The sleeves are not. The cape is goddamned nylon or something, the sleeves probably something like polyester. They’re distinctly different shades of white. That’s fucking terrible.)
The extreme and obvious GQ/nerdlord dynamic tension is pretty much exactly what I wanted and didn’t know I wanted.
(Bail Organa, meanwhile, was clearly wearing some form of wool blend, with a heft and luscious drape
you could really mash your face into; notice the upper part of the garment, where it crosses over the shoulders, has turned and stitched hems for structure but the lower opening is unhemmed, clearly made of something fulled that wouldn’t fray and needed no edge-stitching.)
(I need to stop, someone make me stop.)#Important Fashion Analysis#dry cleaning bills brought down the empire#you heard it here first#rogue one (@bomberqueen17 )
This is everything I wanted in a post about this outfit. I could not take my eyes off it the first time I saw it. (An EZup! That is it exactly!)
On the other hand, you never doubt it’s him, which means the design is doing its job. And it feels … very 70s. As is only right.
